Stop Dragging People in Network Marketing

A common question I get all the time when it comes to building your network marketing is, "Emily, how do I stop dragging people. How do I get people motivated, involved + engaged? When is enough enough?"

We’ve all felt this, and in my 10-year journey of building my network marketing company I know, I’ve definitely have! At the end of the day, you never want to drag people… it’s no fun for you or for them. The minute you feel like you have to force someone to do something, to show up for a training session: you’re not reaping any of the benefits of what network marketing is -- which is real leverage.

The Set-Up

I’ve found that we often get into this predicament, this trouble zone with dragging people because the initial set up of bringing someone on is never done properly.

Here is what 90% of people say when signing someone up, "It’ll be fun, we’ll make lots of money, it’s so easy!"

Here is the deal.... when you bring people in with loose fluffy language, you'll attract loose fluffy people with little to no commitment.

Instead your vibe and language needs to say, "This is a business"  try asking them how many hours a week they can commit, and how you can hold them accountable.

When you just throw people in, they’re going to be fluffy and not take it seriously

You have to ask someone what THEY want. You have to learn to communicate properly. What I found is that, people are very casual because of social media however if you want to GO PRO I suggest to schedule a face-to-face meeting them (or a zoom) so you can figure out what they want and guide them.

Ask Questions

What I do when someone who initially came in to the biz pumped up.....  suddenly vanishes… I just check-in. I ask them how they’re doing. This is a relationship business, you need to check in with people! You never know what someone might be going through.

I’ve found that just simply asking, “how are you” can make all the difference.

If something did come up, I urge you to have empathy. This is not a dictatorship. Ask what you can do as a friend and as a mentor. Just tell them to let you know when they’re ready to get back in and keep building… that makes someone stay.

If it’s not a big life thing, and they just do what most people do when fear sets in -- they run away from their dreams and go back to their old life, then I would ask “Has something changed for you?” and bring up their initial WHY. (Why they started the biz in the first place?)

Communication is Key

They should have enough respect for you and your time to let you know if something has changed, that way you don’t have to cross them off your list, but instead set them aside for now to find someone who wants it.

One thing I ask you to remember is that some people have been employed their whole lives, they might not have the discipline or know how to find the motivation to keep going after a full day’s work to build their dreams. Some people aren’t conditioned for that, so give them grace.

At the end of the day it all comes down to one thing: communication!  Your first step is to ASK the right questions and set them up for success.

Have you ever had this experience?

Let me know in the comments, and as always -- let me know if you have any questions! I can elaborate more on my podcast.
